A Big Week: A Great Article and a Book That Finally Made It Into the World

It’s been about a year since my last post. Not because of the usual rhythm of the studio, but because I’ve been head-down on something longer. This weekend finally broke the drought.

On Friday, Domain ran a piece on Melody’s project focused on why design matters, the traps homeowners fall into, and how the right decisions up front can save you a world of grief later. If you missed it, here’s the link:

A good moment all round. A nice project, a smart client, and a story that begins to help people see what’s going on behind the scenes when they renovate or build. And the timing couldn’t have been better, because the other big thing happened — the book finally came out.

Find Your Way Home — released on Friday 21 November.

For the last two years I’ve been pulling together everything I’ve learned: the patterns, the warning signs, the choices that make or break a project, and turning it into something people can actually use. The short version: it’s the Lonely Planet guide for the design and build journey. What’s ahead, what to look out for, and how to get through it without blowing the budget, the timeline, or your sanity.

Big thanks to everyone who’s reached out over the last few days. I’ll try not to leave it another year before the next post.

Awarded the Architects Board of South Australia Prize in 2001, I began my career in Melbourne in 2002. In 2007 I started my practice with a beach house in Queenscliff. Intent on focusing on private dwellings, I continued working with builders to understand how to better implement an architectural design, which ultimately led to my own builder’s license. In 2015 I joined Destination Living to work on scaling the architect-builder model. Finally, in 2021 I pulled it all together to open my one-person office.
